7th January 2013:
Today we took a drive to Glenbawn Dam just south/east of Scone. While driving to the dam we passed several extremely large horse studs - one in particular was Arrowfield Stud - their horse training centre is one to be seen very large to cater for these pampered thoroughbreds. It saddens me to see how dry the land which normally has beautiful green & fertile fields now surcumbed to lack of rain with dry brown grass & the black soil plains cracked. The only paddocks which I see green are the ones who their owners have watered with irrigation & a lot are growing lucerne. Most small acreages are hand feeding their cattle.
Glenbawn Dam which is 95% full - which is an oxymoran to what I have just been describing, is a haven for water sports enthuasists including fishing. The surrounds are very well kept with cabins & cottages www.lakeglenbawncottages.com.au being let out all seasons. A caravan park is situated where we have to pay to enter cost per car is $10. The website for more information for the caravan park is www.caravanandcampbing.com.au/UpperHunter.
Construction of the dam was completed in 1958.
The main purpose of the dam is flood mitigation. It also regulates water supply in the Hunter River for irrigation.
