Sunday 17th February 2013:
Drew & I decided to follow some of our well known bushrangers exploits through a couple of areas, one was Forbes which is well known Ben Hall & Frank Gardiner gangs roamed the area. Our first town we visited was Eugowra where Ben Hall held up the local hotel - twice. A visit to the local museum told the story of him and others in the area. Whilst in Eugowra we sighted murals depicting the past.
We then travel to Forbes, which is located on the Newell Highway between Parkes and West Wyalong. Forbes with a population of 6,954. We then take up the story at the local museum/tourist information centre which was the old railway station where out the front stands a statue to Ben Hall.
In 1860, Ben Hall took up the lease of a property at Sandy Creek, south of Forbes, where he lived with his wife Biddy and baby son Henry. He and his partner, John McGuire, sold cattle to the miners on the diggings at Lambing Flat.
But in early 1862 his life was turned upside down when his wife left him for another man, taking their son with her. Ben Hall was devastated by this turn of events.
Wrongly accused and devastated by circumstances, Ben Hall took up the gun and cried 'Stand and Deliver' on the highways around the goldfields.
He began associating with Frank Gardiner, a bushranger who frequented the area. Soon he was in trouble with the police when he was arrested on charges of highway robbery, but was released after a witness changed his evidence.
He then joined Gardiner and a number of other young men to carry out the famed Escort robbery at Eugowra Rocks on June 15th 1862, where the gang got away with more than 14000 pounds in gold and cash. Ben Hall felt he had nothing more to lose when he joined a group of bushrangers including Johnny Gilbert and John O'Meally. Meanwhile, Frank Gardiner had escaped to Queensland, taking with him a large share of the loot from the Escort robbery as well as Biddy's younger sister, Kitty.
Over the next 3 years, the Hall-Gilbert gang were involved in hundreds of robberies and there were some sensational episodes. In 1863 they carried out "the raid on Bathurst", when on a Saturday night the gang rode boldly into town, visited a gunshop and a jeweller, bailed up patrons at the Sportsman's Arms, then casually left under cover of darkness, robbing a number of inns and stores as they went.
A few days later they bailed up the village of Canowindra, holding a celebration at Robinson's Hotel where all the local residents were held for 3 days. There was considerable drinking, feasting and merry-making, with even the local constable was coerced into joining the entertainment. The five gang members insisted on paying the hotelier for the spree as a display of their honesty and respect for the common man.
The prestige and morale of the police was certainly undermined by the bushrangers. But after the killing of a police sergeant during an attack on the Gundagai mail coach, and the murder of Constable Nelson at Collector, the situation became so serious that the New South Wales government enacted special legislation to 'outlaw' the bushrangers, which meant that they could be shot on sight without warning by anyone at any time.
By early 1865, there was 1000 pounds reward being offered for the capture of each member of the gang. They met at Billabong Creek near Forbes. This time the police were watching and waiting. At dawn on Friday 5th May, an unsuspecting Ben Hall walked out of the scrub to collect his horses. Eight police opened fire with shotguns and rifles; a few seconds later the bushranger lay dead on the ground with more than thirty bullet wounds.
Ben Hall was buried at Forbes cemetery, two days before his 28th birthday. Nearly two hundred people attended his funeral, such was the widespread sympathy for a young man who had fallen so far. Ben was buried in a pauper's grave - unmarked, when overnight a neat picket fence appeared around the grave and in the 1920s a headstone was erected.

Mt Canoboalas & Lake Canobalas
Saturday 16th February 2013
We travel to Orange once per week to grocery shop. We decided to visit Mt Canobolas which is of volcanic origin. It is located 13 kilometres southwest of Orange. Mount Canobolas, at an altitude of 1,395 metres above sea level, is the highest mountain in the central tablelands district. The northern slopes of the mountain, with fertile volcanic soil, are becoming a popular cold-climate wine producing area. We travelled along a narrow road with small amount of gravel to drive to the summit, half way up the mountain is a warning to use chains on tyres during winter & snow. At the top it seems that you can see forever - beautiful.
The top of the mountain is now dominated by numerous towers used for television and radio transmissions across large areas of central New South Wales. These transmitters include towers for Airservices Australia, Royal Australian Air Force, Prime Television, WIN Television, Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Southern Cross Ten.
We then drove to Lake Canobolas which is small but the picnic area is quite picturesque.

LIFE IN A SMALL COUNTRY TOWN
Cudal has a population of approx 350 people. In our caravan park there are five vans (4 are permanent residents) and a couple of backpackers who are Italian males working at Monument Winery.
No shops to speak of a post office, shire council offices, a chemist, a doctor who visits twice per week 9am - 12 noon, a community nurse & physiotherapist who visit a few days per week. A swimming pool, which is next door - but only opens for a couple of hours per day and you have to compete with the school kids, a cultural centre where they have a free library and today I start down there volunteering my services. A cafe which I have not been to...... A bowling club and a pub - what's a town without local watering holes.
I have managed to walk everywhere, but that's easy as I only have to walk up the main street.
Whilst here I have managed to burn dinner a couple of times by using the gas oven - and somehow managed to crack my good casserole dish - hazzards of not knowing the oven!!!!
Drew has started on early morning shifts at the winery - on Wednesday was told he starts at 4am, his body clock is a little out of wack. He told me of one instance where a winery worker let the big stainless steel vat of Shiraz (which hurt Drew as this is what he drinks) spill over and they lost anything up to 500 litres - keep your eye on the job people!!! Didn't affect him as Drew is the forky.
All in all the caravan park is very quiet as most residents work.

Visit to Parkes & "The Dish"
Yesterday we drove to Parkes - very pretty parks & a nice feel to the place. The dish can be seen from miles around as it is situated on the plains. Very amazing. We visited the Tourist Information Centre where they had a full sized statue of Elvis Presley. Parkes has the Elvis festival annually. The town of Parkes and the surrounding region of 5,919 square kilometres (2,285 sq mi), with a population of approximately 14,592.
Parkes Observatory, just outside approx 15kms on Newell Hwy & 5kms in, hosts the 64-metre Parkes radio telescope, one of the telescopes comprising CSIRO’s Australia Telescope National Facility. Star of the film, 'The Dish', the Parkes radio telescope has been in operation since 1961 yet continues to be at the forefront of astronomical discovery thanks to regular upgrades.

Cowra - Cudal
View Larger Map A very pretty drive from Cowra to Cudal. We have set up the caravan, paying $97 per week. Met the man who works for the Council (Wayne) he looks after the van park & told him we will do some watering of the grounds as it looks quite brown. It will help him as he is very busy. We had a very windy, raining night last night. We share the park with Nick & Michael two young men from Italy who are here on a working visa & working at Monument wines. A shearer who is only home on weekends, a lady who works in Orange, & the final van - well people do live in it, but we never see them - they have four cars & you hear two of the cars go to work!!!!!! but that's all we see of them.
